Panakkaran - The Golden Decade of 90's Rajini!
Rajini began the 80's decade with blockbuster Billa and ended with blockbuster Mappillai. Same
the way in 90's decade Panakkaran was Rajini's first release becoming a blockbuster and ending with
gigantic blockbuster Padayappa!
Panakkaran was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's Lawaaris and remade in Telugu as Naa Desam
with NTR! Later in Tamil as Panakkaran. The Telugu version had a lot of changes as the makers
changed the story to make it a political film to boost the NTR political party launch during that
time!
Panakkaran was the first collaboration between Rajini and director P Vasu! Later on, P Vasu
directed Mannan Uzhaippali Chandramukhi and Kuselan with Rajini!
P Vasu was a hotshot commercial director churning out hits in Tamil and Kannada during that
time! In Tamil is mainly known for his combo with Sathyaraj and Prabhu!
Lawaaris was a 3 hrs long film in Hindi but P Vasu did good changes in Tamil keeping the length
short to max 2 and half hours being faithful to the original!
Lawaaris was hugely popular for the song Mere Angene Mein, Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai having
Amitabh in a lady get up dance! In Tamil, Ilaiyaraaja gave the unforgettable song Nooru
Varusham became so famous that even today the song is played in marriages!
Rajini pulled off the lady get up with saree & mustache in Nooru Varusham which was received
by the audience nicely!
Commercially to the film did so extraordinarily at the box office completing the silver jubilee in
Chennai & Madurai being the big Pongal winner among the releases!
Silver jubilee function was conducted with Kamal Hassan as a chief guest! Since now Annaatthe
is released and rocked at the box office, I would like to remind you all of an interesting thing! Rajini
in his silver jubilee speech gave a statement saying, "Even if a hero is 70 years old until there
are producers ready to invest money, directors, showing interest to work and audience eager to
see the film then the hero is always 20 years old only". So Rajini's magic never fades!
